ActiTrainer Personal Activity Monitor, Black Review

ActiTrainer Personal Activity Monitor, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using my Actitrainer for over a week and have gone back and forth on whether I'm satisfied or not. First, I'll list the pro's: Pedometer seems to be accurate; heart rate monitor appears accurate and works well; product is small and can be conveniently worn without being noticeable; fairly easy to operate. Cons: The previous reviewer is right about the calculations not being based on heart rate. This was a real disappointment to me. While I was warned about activities such as weight lifting and cycling being grossly underestimated, I thought this would be useful to calculate calories burned during aerobics/dance type workouts. Calories are calculated, but seem very under-estimated. And if I stop periodically for weightlifting or calisthenics, even though my heart rate is maintained, the calorie burn shows as 0. That leads to the next drawback which is the online service that you can subscribe to for $9.95/month. Software for Actitrainer Client comes with the product for free, but doesn't allow you to display your data. The only way to actually display and track your data is use the Virtual Trainer product. In my opinion, for $200, this could have been provided as free software, not an online service. As for the website, I see improvements that could be made, but it seems that updates are constantly being made, so I'll probably suggest additional features for what it's worth.
The meal tracker section of web page was awkward. On my first day, I got a runtime error and was unable to enter my calories in. It would be very helpful if there were a way to make some manual adjustments to the calories burned totals also. For instance, knowing that you can't wear the trainer while swimming or that you don't get the full calories burned for aerobics, we could still estimate the numbers and manually adjust them on the web. That way, our calorie deficits and other graphs would be more accurate.
The sleep tracker is an interesting feature, but again you have to subscribe to use it. This isn't a feature I would use regularly however. I really like the way you can display detailed minute-by-minute info on your workouts to show heart rates, calories burned per minute, etc. There's also a lot of detail when you're in lifestyle mode. Again, all of this looks accurate.
All in all, I think this product should have cost less and should not require the online subscription. Compared to what I had researched on similar products, I think this works comparably if not better, but the price is higher. Ideally, I still think the Body Bugg would have been what I wanted, but it comes with a heftier price tag and requires the user to wear a big armband all the time, as well as subscribe to an even more expense website.

The ActiTrainer uses a triaxial accelerometer to measure and record personal activity levels, calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled and pace. Heart rate information is available when the included Polar strap is worn. This data can be viewed in real time on the device and then uploaded into the subscription-based Virtual Trainer Console for detailed analysis and progress tracking. The Virtual Trainer also allows you to track and monitor calories consumed, set weight loss, performance and nutritional goals, measure sleep quality and more! To find out more visit the ActiTrainer website. NOTE: THE ACTITRAINER AND ITS SOFTWARE ARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MAC COMPUTERS AT THIS TIME.

Omron Hip Pedometer Review

Omron Hip Pedometer

I purchased this model over a year ago and the first one stopped functioning after two or three months. I received a replacement from Omron (they wanted to collect a "shipping and handling" charge that was almost the the same as the price of a new one, but I refused to pay it). The replacement worked for a few months, and then it stopped working too. The screen worked, the low battery indicator was not activated, but it just stopped counting steps.
I like the concept of a pedometer and this model is simple and easy to use, with a clear display and easy scrolling of step counts for the past seven days, but if you want a product that will last, I suggest you avoid this model and perhaps avoid Omron entirely, as I expect most of their models use the same basic design.

This is the second one I've owned--I accidently broke my other one. I have tried other ones and I have never been happy with them. I like the buttons on the side--the ones that are on the front can easily be bumped and that will erase anything that is on it. I also had trouble with my step count on the other ones. This one is very accurate. I actually purchased 2 of them so that I have one in back up.

I've tried several pedometers over the years, but this one is definitely the best. Other pedometers have fallen off my waistband, not counted steps if they were a little bit sideways, counted far too many steps, and just plain not worked after only a short time.
I bought this Omron in December and it is now the end of January. It has a high quality case that feels solid, unlike others that feel so fragile that normal handling has made them fall apart. It counts accurately, I don't have to worry about keeping it in exactly the right position because it counts steps correctly as long as it is vertical. That means it can be any which way in a pocket or bag as long as it isn't laying flat like it would on a table.
The 7 day memory is nice too if you want to track your steps per day over time. You can look back and see your step total. It also calculates distance and calories and something called aerobic steps. The aerobic steps is just a smaller number than the total steps. The little safety clip has prevented it from falling to the ground on several occasions. I use it almost every day. I walk more with it than without it because I like to see my step number going up. I've only gotten 10,000 steps a few times, but my average continues to climb.
You can buy this pedometer with confidence and start adding up the steps! Have fun!

Sportline 340 Step & Distance Pedometer Review

Sportline 340 Step and Distance Pedometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My sole issue with this pedometer is that the clip doesn't function well. The pedometer is constantly falling off my garments' waistband, regardless of the thickness of material. It's simply poorly designed. Last night the pedometer fell off while I was sitting in a movie theater -- I had to go back when I noticed it was gone (luckily, before we left the theater) and search for it. When I got home, I improvised a secondary clipping system, using a metal clip and safety pin, but this is cumbersome.
I haven't had problems with the pedometer resetting itself, even with the exposed faceplate. It takes a prolonged pressure to cause it to reset. However, for some reason each day as I reset the pedometer, it shifts modes from "miles" to "kilometers." I have to remember to reset it *twice* to keep it in mile mode.
Having said this, I've found this to be one of the most accurate pedometers I've ever owned. (I've had four or five.) If Sportline would address the problems with the clip, this would be a stellar pedometer.

I LOVE this pedometer! Had two cheaper ones before I purchased this one and threw them both out. This pedometer is sturdy and accurate. It keeps track of the last seven days of activity, calories, moderate steps. It even knows the date and time, and resets itself automatically every day. It has yet to fall off like the cheaper brands. For the money, I'd highly recommend this one.

Omron Hj-113 Pocket Pedometer, Walking Style, Black Review

Omron Hj-113 Pocket Pedometer, Walking Style, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've spent plenty of money on pedometers that never seemed to work for me. The clips would break, the number of steps were never accurate, they'd fall off... never to be seen again. Until I found this one. This current model has a really COOL color scheme, but the underlying product is PHENOMINAL. For those reviews that say they "lost" their pedometer due to a falty clip, the only thing I can say there is they must not have engaged the safety strap that I clip to my belt loop to avoid such a situation. Of course, as a male, I wear pants with a belt loop, and so this has never been a problem. This current product is an upgrade from my previous one, which lasted nearly 4 years before the unit itself stopped working properly. An upgrade on this version from the previous one is the "reset" button is no longer on the front and accidental resets (a small problem previously) no longer occur.
Options I love: 7 day memory, auto reset at midnight, EXTREMELY accurate counting of steps.
My only "negative" comment about the product is the inaccurate counts I get when I wear the thing on long runs. Depending on where I put it, it can be off a bit, and I'm not annoyed enough by that to give it a negative star rating. That's what I get for taking the thing to the edge of it's capabilities. If you want the most accurate step counter on the market, you can't beat this product at the price it's offered. You could spend a lot more for a product as accurate, but why?

Lost one pedometer (expensive one from my wife) the first week of wearing one. Got a leash and haven't lost one in months since, though at least 4 times have found pedometer hanging from leash. The fact that I also wear a fanny pack while walking may increase my loss rate, having that rubbing against it. So leash may be less essential for you than for me.

Although your pedometer has a belt clip, add a pedometer leash for extra insurance that your pedometer does not hit the ground if it somehow falls off your waistband. The leash attaches to your pedometer at one end, and a metal clip to your waistband ensuring that you never lose your pedometer.

Omron HIP Pedometer Review

Omron HIP Pedometer
Average Reviews:

This pedometer counts all the steps you take while walking at a moderate pace, during the course of one day. Pressing a button will display the number of steps you have walked so far on that day. Then at midnight it stores the total, and resets the count to zero, ready for the next day's walking. Pressing the button repeatedly will show how many steps you walked on each of the previous seven days. Setup is easy -- you only have to set the time of day. The instructions are confused on one point: when they say "The unit must be positioned horizontally . . ." they really mean vertically, the position it automatically assumes when clipped to your belt.
I see this item listed five times here, but this one is the only one that ships from and is sold by Amazon.com, and qualifies for Super Saver shipping.

This is the best pedometer that I have owned and yes I have had 4 of them...I reviewed many and am very happy with this purchase!!! It keeps accurate information for review for 7 days and does break down regular to moderate steps taken, miles and time...so if you walk, it keeps an accurate record...if you jog or speed walk, it keeps that accurate under moderate steps...It is not bulky, the clip holds tightly (even when you jog or speed walk) and it is very easy to read the numbers...What an easy set up also with the instuctions provided! I would highly recommend this one!! With my Amazon Prime membership, shipping was free and it came in 2 days!

Omron HJ-720ITC Pocket Pedometer with Advanced Omron Health Management Software Review

Omron HJ-720ITC Pocket Pedometer with Advanced Omron Health Management Software
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think this is an excellent pedometer -- it does the job well and accurately. It counts your steps whether it is clipped on, in your pocket or in a purse. The auto-reset to zero at midnight helps keep you honest. Like the software - a couple of clicks and your data is automatically uploaded. It shows your results on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis. Omron is the only company I have seen that provides you with software.
I think the manual that comes with the device could be slightly improved but here are some tips that may help you with setting it up and using it for the first time:
(1) With the back cover off, make note of the serial number. It is engraved into the case in tiny letters near the bottom. It is a six character mix of letters and numbers. You'll need this for registration later.
(2) Before starting to configure your pedometer, you will need to calculate the length of your stride. Pick a starting point and walk 10 regular steps. Measure the distance in inches and divide by 10. Make a note of the result to use later.

(3) In the software, I suggest setting modest "daily goals" to start. Adjust your goals up or down anytime through the software's Options menu as you get use to the pedometer.
(4) The "Set" button on the front is smaller than the others and is intended to be used occasionally to reset the time, your weight, etc. as needed - it does not reset or delete your step data. As a good practice, upload your pedometer data regularly as a backup. In the unlikely event that the "Set" button is accidently pressed , just press "Set" another 4 or 5 times and you'll come back to your normal "step" screen.
(5) Step count - this pedometer shows total steps (both aerobic and regular steps)in the "step" count screen. To see only the aerobic steps accomplished for the day, go to the next screen. It keeps a separate count for aerobic steps (60 steps or more per minute continuously for 10 minutes or longer).
(6) While you can view the last 7 days of step data on the device itself, it actually holds up to 42 days in memory. All data is viewable once uploaded to your pc.
Hope this helps... I highly recommend this device.

Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer Review

Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Since getting attached to pedometers a couple of years ago, I've gone through at least a dozen--Digiwalkers, Oregon Scientifics, Omrons. Sometimes the clips would break (Digiwalkers have no spring clip), or the cover would snap off, or they would prove highly inaccurate, or they would be bulky, or they would be too "versatile" and intricate to be practical for someone who was simply looking to get in 10,000 steps for the day. For this reason, I recommended the Sportline 330 as a comparatively rugged, accurate, and inexpensive step counter that, if need be, could be replaced with minimal financial damage.
But recently I saw this "high end" Omron at Walgreen's and thought I'd give it a spin. Its primary allure: it claims to be so sensitive that you don't need to wear it on a belt or some other outer wear. Just drop it in your shirt pocket or purse and forget about it.
Guess what? The Omron people aren't pulling your leg. This is indeed a very sensitive little machine that does what it says it will do, in addition to being fast, easy, convenient, and extremely durable. I decided to test it by walking 30-40 minutes with the Omron in my shirt pocket and the Sportline clipped to my belt. At the end of my walk the Omron and Sportline were within 80 steps of each other. Moreover, it was the Omron that gave me the extra steps (a bonus if you consider the amount of time it takes--practically 2 hours--to log the full 10,000 steps).
The only advanced feature I occasionally use is the memory bank. The device automatically resets to 0 steps while saving the previous day's count in memory (for up to a week). Although I set the clock, I rarely use the other extra features--calorie counter, aerobic read-out, or even distance covered. I don't even bother with things like entering stride length and attaching clips or necklaces. This particular Omron model rises above the field because of one thing: quality. It's accurate, it's easy and fast, and it's dependable if not indestructible (I've sat on it, inadvertently sent it through the wash, dropped it into a bath-tub). It keeps going, as long as you do. If you have a shirt pocket and know how to read from one to 10,000, you're on your way.
You can never have too many good pedometers, but this Omron makes it unlikely you'll need another one any time soon. There's no question in my mind that this is best of breed, the one that Tiger Woods would use even if he had to pay for it and realized no rewards other than the practical and motivational benefits of the device itself. At its current price, it's probably the best buy on Amazon.
