At first I thought this little gadget had a database with a lot of different foods and that it would list the calorie content of all of the foods. I thought it would also track my calories. I was right about tracking the calories, but not about it having a database. Instead it came with a book which listed the calorie content in common foods. The book is ok, but I like to figure out calories with [...]. I was disappointed at first when I found out I would have to figure out the calorie content of my foods on my own, but after a week of using it, I love it!! I've already lost three pounds! It really helps me to keep track of my calorie consumption and burning. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to lose weight. Just be careful not to go too low on your calories and eat healthy foods...they have less calories anyway!!

Rocketech Count Down to Slim Calorie, Carb and Fat Counting System Review

Rocketech Count Down to Slim Calorie, Carb and Fat Counting System

I liked the idea of this product so I bought it. It is relatively easy to use, with just a few pushes of two buttons, it can keep track of your daily numbers. It's very light . . . almost so light that I feel like it will break, but I have yet to break it. It has a "lock" feature so the buttons can't be pushed when in your pocket. It will also turn off if you haven't used it in awhile so that it saves batteries.
The one thing that I don't like is that it beeps every time you push a button. So if you are looking to keep track of calories discretely, know that it will make a beep every time you push a button. You may be pushing the button as many as 7-25 times to enter in a number. And might take you 3 times that, depending on how many things you are keeping track of. (ie: calories, fat and protein might be a total of 15-60 button pushes) I would not be able to "track" my calories in my office because people would probably ask what that beeping noise is. Also, in order to see the digital screen you have to be looking straight on.
All in all, I would recommend this product to people who don't want to write it down on paper or have to be by a computer . . . I would say it's worth the value (

HealthFitCounter Handheld Diet and Exercise Counter Review

HealthFitCounter Handheld Diet and Exercise Counter

I received this as a gift to replace a spreadsheet that I had been using at work to track what I had been eating. It is a better way to track caloric intake as I can have it with me all day and it starts you out with a reasonable database of foods.
The unit itself is designed to resemble a PDA with stylus/touchscreen interaction. It is made of plastic and is of lower quality than traditional PDAs, but is a good ergonomic shape/size and simple to use. The touchscreen is effective, although not as sensitive as PDAs I have owned. Both the touchscreen and the unit itself work well for what they are, and the quality of the materials lend to the reasonable price for the unit. There is a thumbwheel on the upper left side which can be used to adjust the screen's contrast, and this feature seemed to work well.
The software/PC link included allows the user to back up their data, as well as more easily add and edit the food database. It installed easily on my Windows XP Home Edition machine without problems, and the link works well if you follow the instructions provided. Data transfer from PC to handheld or handheld to PC involves transeferring all the data, not just updates, so it takes about a minute each time you transfer. It is a very basic program, essentially mirroring the software on the unit itself, but again does the job well.
Overall, I am very pleased with the HealthFitCounter thus far. It has improved my understanding of what I eat by tracking calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbs, fiber, sugar, and protein (where I only tracked calories and fat previously - I now know I eat WAY too much sugar). It becomes easier/faster to use as you add commonly eaten foods to your "favorites" list and add foods that were not preloaded with the unit. You can also use the preloaded food data to build up a meal when you eat out to approximate the caloric content (i.e. instead of "Chicken dinner at_______", simply select 6 ozs of chicken, add your dinner rolls, vegetables, and pasta, and the unit tallies the approximate calories into your daily totals.)
Overall I like this unit and am very satisfied. It is easy to use, always handy, unobtrusive, and it gets the job done.

CalorieSmart - Handheld Calorie Counter (CS80S) Review

CalorieSmart - Handheld Calorie Counter (CS80S)

(More customer reviews)
This is a wonderful little tool.
I was apprehensive that it would be too complicated to get much use out of. On the contrary it was easy to enter my personal data, and it is easy to enter food information. It has a huge amount of food choices and you can enter your own food information or do a "quick entry" of calories consumed and calories burned. I have checked several package information labels against the food information in this system and it is VERY accurate. For some of the entries, if I know the calorie information is different, I will just change the size or amount of the serving so the calories entered is closer to being accurate. You can log entries into a "favorite" category so the data entry becomes very quick if you are eating some of the same foods regularly. You can push a single button to get your calorie count for the day. Another button will give you the "net" calories if you have entered exercise information. It stores entries for daily goals and compares your actual intake and outgo to your goals entered. You can enter recipe information to calculate calories. (I have not tried that option yet.) You can also track the protein, carbohydrates, sodium, etc. being consumed.
It is small and light, so it is easy to slip into a purse or pocket. It is SO much more convenient than looking up and logging information into a journal, computerized or paper. I made a commitment that if I ate it, it had to be entered. If I could not enter it, I could not eat it. This has been a very eye opening tool. I have entered the food I was intending to eat and when the calorie count showed up, have altered my choice of food or the portion size to limit the calories consumed. It turns out, that I may not always realize how many calories really are in the food being consumed. This gadget has really helped.
I have NEVER counted calories. I have always felt exercising more (or at all)was a better answer to losing weight. I would choose what I thought were better food choices whenever I was working out to lose weight. Forget the counting of the calories, I wasn't really eating THAT much. I did not have the time to count calories. I never really lost the weight, and continually gained it because my crazy busy life kept getting in the way of exercising and eating better. Now at a size way bigger than ever, I realized I must change the way I think about losing weight. Using the CalorieSmart counter has really helped me understand and know what I am consuming and has been a really smart purchase!
UPDATE: During the first two months, using this to track my calories and exercise, I lost 25 pounds. I averaged a weight loss of 2.5 pounds per week.

I think the best part of this scale is the fact that I can put a plate on it, then turn it on and the plate weighs as zero. I can then add food onto the plate as an exact portion size. Being able to check for carbs, fat, protein etc has been a real eye opener!

DietCalc Diet Nutrition Calculator Review

DietCalc Diet Nutrition Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had one of these under the Nutri-Counter brand that I used for 4 years before the batteries died, when I decided just to buy a new one rather than replace them. The units are virtually identical, so I think only the name has changed. (In between I tried a CalorieSmart, which I hated and returned because it was too cumbersome and time-consuming to use - for example you have to enter the whole word for a food - and it has a big bump on the back so you can't even lay it down to use it, you have to hold it all the time). But the Dietcalc is flat and compact. It's easy to use in that you can enter one or more letters and it will instantly bring up the first choice beginning with that letter or combination of letters and from there you can scroll through items alphabetically. You can then select the item and change the quantity if necessary. This principle also works when adding new foods, so that if you find something similar to your new item, you can bring it up, enter the name for your new entry, change any or all of the values (calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbs, sugar, fiber, and protein), press save, and have your new item as a permanent addition. To save time, for meals or snacks I routinely consume, I like to enter all the components, like shreaded wheat, milk, and orange juice for breakfast, write down the totals, then make a new entry such as "BR" with my toal values, so that's all I have to enter every morning. You can also set goals in each catagory and the on-screen value will flash if you go over. And it has a balance button so you can see how many calories, etc., you have remaining before you reach the daily limits you've set. I'm mainly interested in controlling calories, fat, and sodium, and I've found it very helpful as an aid for staying at or under my goals for those. On the downside, you can't review the items you've entered - you only see the running totals for the day.
